Connect Four
Create a Web based Connect Four game. This is required to enter the Chingu team project.
I used native JavaScript, some CSS and HTML for this project. As I was pressed for time while doing this, I used the ASP.NET Core boilerplate in Visual Studio. I believe that is a little overkill for a project of this scope, but I just wanted to get it done quickly.
The moderators at Chingu were happy with my submission, it was simple and working as intended. The comment I received was to remove those console messages we developers use in our source code.
Auckland Airport Motel
Build a responsive website for Auckland Airport Motel. The owner also wants to be able to add or edit text and images on the website.
Since the client wants to add or edit content, a CMS came to my mind. I didn’t know how to develop a website using a CMS during this time so I quickly researched one. I decided on using Umbraco CMS because
A. I have familiarity using .NET
B. Umbraco being a completely blank slate is what made it appealing to me
C. I really want to learn Umbraco
Aside from using ASP.NET MVC, I also used the usual trio of JS/HTML5/SCSS.
The 3rd party services I used were – MailGun, Google API, and Staah Booking Engine. I then hosted the site on Umbraco Cloud.
The client was very happy with the site. He said compared to the last CMS he used where he got confused on how to edit content ( it was built on WordPress), the one I built with Umbraco is user friendly and intuitive.
Middlemore Motel
Rebuild the website of Middlemore Motel. Make the site responsive and user-friendly.
This is a simple website and I want to use just the right tool to complete the task, I didn’t use a CMS as the client said he would rarely update the site’s content. For development I used – ASP.NET MVC, Javascript, and Bootstrap SASS. I then used Git for version control.
I also used 3rd party services – SocketLabs, Google API, and Welman Booking Engine. I then used an App Service and hosted the site on Windows Azure.
The client was happy with the outcome, the website is now responsive and has an updated look. Bookings can be now be made on mobile phones as well.
Today marks the end of my remote work with other developers. Most of my worries at the beginning of this actually came true! In our defense though, we still managed to finish our MVP. Our project needs UI and UX updates, and I’ll work on it again sometime in the future. All in all, I am happy with how it turned out. I’m going to write down what I believe were my biggest weaknesses during the project, while it is still fresh in my brain.
